Los Angeles County and Inglewood authorities said Monday they will aggressively investigate and prosecute those who use illegal fireworks as the Fourth of July holiday draws closer.
As large-scale pyrotechnics can potentially lead to a wildfire, cause bodily injuries as well as property damage, authorities reminded people that even "safe and sane" fireworks are illegal in many parts of LA County.

According to Cal Fire, illegal fireworks include firecrackers, skyrockets, bottle rockets, Roman candles, aerial shells and even sparklers, as well as "other fireworks that explode, go into the air, or move on the ground in an uncontrollable manner.''
After an Inglewood neighborhood was rattled by powerful, illegal explosives last Christmas, injuring a woman and damaging homes and cars, it is now illegal to purchase or sell all types of fireworks within city limits. Those with permits issued by the fire department are only allowed to use and discharge fireworks.

"Illegal fireworks are not just dangerous, they're criminal. If you set off explosives in our neighborhoods, injure our residents, damage our homes, and terrorize our communities, we will come after you with the full weight of the law," LA County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said. "Do not gamble with your freedom this Fourth of July.''
The LA County Fire Department also reminded residents that the county fire code states "it is illegal to store, manufacture, sell, use, or handle ALL FORMS of fireworks without a valid permit in unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.''
The Los Angeles County Fire Department encourages families to attend a public fireworks show conducted by State-licensed pyrotechnicians,'' the county fire agency says on its website.
The city of Los Angeles issued a statement last week reminding residents that "All fireworks, even the so-called `safe and sane' variety are illegal in the City of Los Angeles.''
